As some of you already know, unlocking an iDevice means to remove all restrictions imposed by a carrier when you buy the device based on a contract. After you unlock it, you have the possibility to use it outside your country without paying huge fees for roaming services. Fortunately, now we have the possibility to unlock iOS 5.1.1 running on iPhone 4, 3GS with Ultrasnow 1.2.7. The process is actually pretty simple because Ultrasnow 1.2.7 works alone in a quick manner. Since in some previous posts we have already discussed how to unlock iPhone 3GS/4 running on iOS 5.0.1 with Ultrasnow 1.2.5, and now we will discuss about the iOS 5.1.1.
Just to be sure, start a backup plan before using the iTunes account to have all your important files in as safe place if something goes wrong. In this way, you can always access the backup and click on Restore. Some people might feel quite uncomfortable by unlocking their devices, but I must tell you that this process is perfectly legal. It is legal, but your warranty for the device will be voided if the carrier finds out.
This short guide is intended only for some devices and some basebands such as iPhone 4 with 01.59.00 baseband and iPhone 3GS with 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, and 06.15.00. If you do not know what your baseband is, you can easily check it by going in Settings, General and then, in the About section. Here, you will find the Modem Firmware option where your current firmware is displayed. An important note before starting the unlocking process is to upgrade to iOS 5.1.1 through a custom IPSW created using RedSnow in order to preserve the baseband. Before unlock, you need to start jailbreak on your device by using one of the many jailbreak tools available.
1. The first thing you need to do is to launch Cydia Store to search for Ultrasnow. You cannot find the application in the pre-installed sources and in this case, you need to add a new source.
2. In the Sources tab, you need to add the repo666.ultrasnow repo.
3. Once you download Ultrasnow 1.2.7 on your device, install the app by following the exact steps suggested by the app.
4. Wait until the program does its job and then restart your device using the Redsnow to boot in a tethered mode.
At this point, you will successfully finish the unlock process for iOS 5.1.1 on iPhone 3GS/ 4 by using the Ultrasnow 1.2.7.
