Samsung Surpassed Apple in US Smartphone Market

Samsung Electronics may have passed Apple in US Smartphone market in May. According to an analyst’s report, Samsung’s new handset released, the Galaxy S4, which represents a combination between Galaxy Note II’s bigger display and the older Galaxy III, has managed to place Samsung above Apple during the last month.

The investment research firm Canaccord Genuity, argued that the survey was directed to retail stores of carriers such as AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile USA and Sprint.

As the numbers suggested, the Galaxy S4 was the top-selling smartphone for three of US’s major carriers and namely T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint. In the case of AT&T, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 was the second best-selling smartphone after Apple’s iPhone 5.

Samsung Surpassed Apple in Smartphone sales

Michael Walkley, the analyst who conducted the survey confessed the fact that Samsung’s strength lies in the sales of Galaxy S4, SIII and Note II. Samsung Electronics managed to surpass Apple, and it gained top share of the US smartphone market for the first time since the iPhone 5 was launched.

Despite the fact that this might represent a milestone for Samsung and a point down for Apple, the report is not completely conclusive. It is worth mentioning the fact that the survey does not include Apple’s retail store, where a high amount of iPhone units is sold.

In the same time, when Apple decides to release a new device, Samsung’s top place might become the second place once again. As rumors suggest, Apple is planning to release a cheaper iPhone, which is meant for third marketplaces. In this way, Apple will make its way in countries where customers ask for low-priced smartphones such as China, India or Brazil.

The current situation with the smartphone market in US has a precedent. At one point, Samsung’s Galaxy SIII managed to take the first place as the best-selling phone in the world, and the device surpassed Apple’s iPhone 4S. However, the sales numbers for the new iPhone 5 came out later, and the iPhone reached the top spot again.

Based on Samsung’s strategy, apparently, the South Korean manufacturer managed to came out with a plan in order to take advantage of the period between iPhone upgrades, when the iPhone becomes old, and sales are slowing.

Samsung takes advantage of Apple’s predictability in what concerns the iPhone release cycle. As the Cupertino-based company has accustomed its customers, a new iPhone was always released in the fall, just in time for the holiday season.
