Playboy’s New iPhone App Keeps It Classy

The fact that late Apple CEO Steve Jobs assured people that the iPad and iOS platform are free from porn, does not mean that magazines like Playboy, are not allowed to develop its own iOS App. Therefore, although the magazine’s editors had to take a different route when developing the just-launched iPhone app, it has been created.

As a result, at this moment, pictorials of playmates and other models can be found on the app, which has emerged from months of testing, but as stated above there cannot be found nudity. The fact that nudity is not present, and Apple’s content guidelines prohibit pornographic material, does not prevent the subscription-based Playboy app from being provocative.

As Josh Schollmeyer, Playboy’s Director of Digital Content, stated, the app that will undoubtedly help many use their imagination plans to offer the viewer a taste of the Playboy magazine. For that reason, the new subscription-based Playboy app for iOS presents a number of pictorial categories, such as Playmate Redux, God Given Gorgeous, Miss Social, and the celebrity-focused Me in My Place. Moreover, the app promises to have monthly exclusive content about The Good Life, as well as entertaining interviews with different famous people. For instance, this month’s entries include 20 questions with Girls creator/actress Lena Dunham, as well as an interview with the famous music industry mogul Clive Davis.

If Playboy’s non-nude strategy is successful on the iPhone, it could carry over to other smart phones and tablets. Until then, users interested in the app should know that it is compatible with iPhones 3GS and up, third-generation iPod touches and up, and iPads, requiring iOS 5.1 or later. The Playboy app can download it for free from Apple’s App store. However, people interested in viewing the latest content will need to purchase a monthly subscription. Regarding the price of the subscriptions, it appears that it is not unusually high, people interested having to pay $1.99 per month or $19.99 for the year.

Although, the Playboy app contains no nudity, with models wearing much more than they otherwise would under the Playboy banner, the app launched by the Playboy magazine is admitted to be an intelligent move, especially for young readers. The way people are consuming and buying their media has totally changed, and nowadays young people would rather consume the content digitally on their device than on their couch in paper form. Nevertheless, the Playboy iPhone app can be enjoyed by users 17 years of age and up.
