With the iOS 8 out, many users are looking to jailbreak their iOS 8, iOS 8.0.2 or iOS 8.1 iPhones, iPads and iPods Touches. The good news is that the Pangu team has just dropped an iOS 8 – 8.1 jailbreak that works on even the latest devices such as iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and iPad Air 2, along with all previous versions. The jailbreak is currently limited only to SSH, and it does not come with Cydia download Store installed.
With the iOS 7, we were actually pretty lucky, since the Evad3rs managed to cover the early build before the Chinese team Pangu came through to perform jailbreak on the iOS 7.1 and up. I am sure that you are all happy of seeing a new jailbreak possibility that early.
The news of an iOS 8 / 8.1 jailbreak from Pangu is not that of a surprise mostly since i0n1c, the German security researcher and jailbreaker, suggested that Apple has not patched all of the exploits found within the iOS 7.1.1 with the iOS 8 betas. This was translated into the current version of Pangu for the iOS 8-running devices.
Pangu iOS 8 Jailbreak does not Install Cydia Yet
Although this is good news for all jailbreakers out there, it does come with a couple of strings attached that make the tool somehow useless for this moment. The first problem with Pangu’s jailbreak tool is that does not install Cydia yet. It only provides some basic SSH access, and it is geared mostly to developers, since they will be able to update their apps and tweaks for the incoming release of iOS 8 untethered jailbreak.
For this, it is required for Saurik to update Cydia for iOS 8 in order to make it compatible with the new updated OS. Therefore, if you still choose to jailbreak, you will technically perform jailbreak, but you will not be able to enjoy most of jailbreak’s benefits. Saurik already stated that he is currently working on updating Cydia for the iOS 8 – 8.1 Pangu jailbreak, but there are no mentions regarding the time frame.
Pangu iOS 8 Jailbreak Compatibility
The release of Pangu tool is for Windows only and it seems like the team of developers removed the download link, likely to fix several issues linked to this initial release. However, users are still able to gather the needed information regarding the jailbreak process. The most probably is that the Mac version will be available in a short time.
According to Pangu’s website, Pangu for iOS 8 – iOS 8.1 is compatible with the following devices:
- iPod touch 5G
- iPhone 4s
- iPhone 5
- iPhone 5S/C
- iPhone 6/Plus
- iPad mini, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPad, iPad Air, iPad Air 2
In the same time, the team recommends users to update to iOS 8.1 first, or restore to iOS 8.1 via iTunes before proceeding with the jailbreak process. OTA updates can cause various problems during the process. In the same time, as it is required in any jailbreak procedure, users will have to turn off Lock Screen passcode and Find my iPhone option, as well as to backup their devices.
Since the release is not fixed and complete, it is recommended to avoid jailbreaking your devices, at least until Pangu team updates the download link. When this happens, we will provide you with a full step-by-step tutorial on how to jailbreak iOS 8 / 8.1 untethered.
