Regarding the open-source type, as Tim Cook stated at the official release, the iOS 8 represents a major step for the Cupertino-based company since it begins to open up certain elements of the closed-source software. As you know, so far, Apple was quite restrictive regarding its mobile operating system and third-party developers were able to access the software only through jailbreaking. Perhaps, this represents a step to make people say no to jailbreak.

As experts suggested, the new iOS experience will be a more well-rounded, customizable experience moving forward, when comparing to previous OS versions.
