Apple has decided to release the iOS 8.1.2 update for all supported iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices. The update is available both as OTA or direct download via iTunes for all compatible iOS devices.
Even if the iOS 8 is only a few months old, it has already received a bunch of updates meant to solve the initial problems and bugs. The first update, the iOS 8.0.1 was, in fact, unsuccessful since it caused the dreaded No Service warning in the top-left of the display for all iPhone 6 users. In the same time, it brought a non-functional Touch ID.
The iOS 8.0.2 came pretty soon after, and then it was followed by the iOS 8.1 which introduced the Apple Pay. With the iOS 8.1.1, Apple introduced a lot of security fixes and focused on testing and preparing the future iOS 8.2. However, the iOS 8.2 is not expected to see the light of day until the new year. Until then, Apple has decided to roll out small updated to fix all problems and issues, and the release of iOS 8.1.2 proves this.
The small update notably addresses an issue with iTunes Store purchased ringtones disappearing from devices. However, the problem is not that critical, but Apple wanted to make sure that they will solve it before preparing the grounds for the incoming iOS 8.2 major update. Thus, among the bug fixes listed in the change log, the update also deals with some security holes within the iOS software, but there is not clear info regarding the way in which these problems are solved.
According to the official change log, the update is focused in the ringtones problem. In the same time, users are recommended to visit the itunes.com/restore-tones in order to get all those ringtones back on their devices. This is basically all that the new update is offering, at least what Apple is letting us see.
With the iOS 8.2 well into its beta version, that is considered to be the next major software update to Apple’s mobile platform, it is likely to see the iOS 8.1.3 update before the iOS 8.2 reaches the public’s hands.
